A dog in Washington state suffered severe injuries during a trail walk on a hot day. The dog, a golden retriever named Olaf, severely burned the pads of his paws during the outing with his family.

The Medical Lake Veterinary Hospital alerted Facebook followers to the dangers of hot pavement in a public Facebook post about Olaf’s painful injuries:

Hot weather means hot pavement!

Olaf walked over a mile on the Fish Trap Trail before his owner realized his pads were burned, and even then he wasn’t whining or limping! He is one tough cookie (and exceptionally sweet cookie).

Adding:

A good rule of thumb is if the pavement is too hot for your hand it’s too hot for your dogs’ pads.

Our 4-legged friends rarely complain – especially if they are enjoying an outing with friends and family. It is our duty to ensure that they are safe. Check the temperature of sidewalks and pavement before heading out for a walk and remember, if it’s warm outside, leave your pet at home when you run errands in the car!

It is important to know the signs of heatstroke in dogs as well. If your dog is panting excessively, drooling and has red gums, he/she may be overheated! Keep an eye out for concerning symptoms and keep your pet safe.
