Dog watches owner dig his grave and Twitter erupts

On Wednesday, heartbreaking photos of a man digging his dog’s grave (while the dog watched!) were posted on social media and Twitter erupted with retweets and responses. The images were Tweeted on Franklin Hardy’s account with an explanation:

The vet told my dad on the phone (??) that his dog had to be put down and he’d come to his house and do it. My dad dug the dog’s grave AND LET THE DOG WATCH.

Fortunately, things were not as dire as they initially seemed – the T.V. writer followed up:

Then the vet came and checked the dog and said it was a false alarm. Oops! Dog’s fine! Everything about this is insane.

The Tweet went viral – liked nearly 25,000 times and retweeted over 4000 times. The responses have ranged from dismay to humorous:

Why would the vet sentence the dog to death over the phone? No idea. Told my dad he doesn’t sound like a very good vet. Dad: “he’s a great vet!”
