In Bastrop, Texas, a man’s dog was shot twice by authorities after they felt threatened, as the frightened and confused pup tried to protect his owner. Meet Axel; his story is heartbreaking, but his future does look promising.

According to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, on Monday, the Bastrop Narcotics Division served a warrant for Axel’s owner’s arrest. As officers entered the man’s home, the dog became agitated because of the commotion. In turn, officers felt threatened, shot Axel twice – once in the shoulder and once in the face. Moments later, the dog’s owner was taken away in handcuffs.

“Axel was taken by animal control and we were asked by the shelter to help Axel who was injured,” Stacey Silverstein, co-founder of the rescue organization stated. “We had him immediately transported to our Vet Partner.”

Axel underwent surgery at the rescue organization’s San Antonio vet partner to suture the wounds from the gunshots. He is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

A few hours after the arrest, Axel’s owner was released from jail and immediately contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. The man explained he had owned his dog for seven years and claimed the dog was his “soul mate.”

“We don’t want to keep them apart and our Vet who is taking care of Axel’s medical needs, feels he was very well taken care of.

Axel will be ready to leave our Vet in a few days and we hope to reunite Axel with his owner. We were glad we were there to help Axel and give him the medical care he needed,” Stacey added.

Best wishes to Axel for a speedy recovery.

  1. Again Rescue Dogs Rock NYC steps up to help a dog in need. I am so tired of seeing innocent animals shot by the police. Why don’t they allow the owners to contain the dogs before they have to resort to shooting? I hope the owner is allowed to get his dog back, and I think the police department should be held accountable for the vet bills.
