In Hamden, Connecticut, a small dog was rescued from a car as interior temperatures reached more than 120 degrees. Police were called to the parking lot near a Stop & Shop after a concerned citizen reported the disturbing incident and the dog panting excessively inside of the parked vehicle.

According to Channel 3 News, Hamden Officer Rachel Zinni arrived at the location and made an announcement over the loudspeaker to find the owner. No one responded, and the fire department was called to help. As firemen worked to free the Bichon mix, the owner appeared with a cart full of groceries. The dog had been left in the car for 45-minutes.

Shi Zhuhong, 47, was arrested on June 2 and charged with animal cruelty. She is expected to appear in court on June 17.

Citizens are encouraged to report animal neglect or cruelty. If you see something, say something. Summer is quickly approaching, and even though your best furry friend may want to accompany you to the store, don’t leave him in the car alone. Leave him home where it’s cool and comfortable. Too many canine lives have been lost due to their owners leaving them in overheated cars.
