Dog loses leg after being shot by burglar

A dog has lost one of her legs after a burglar broke into her family’s Greensboro, North Carolina, home. As reported by My Fox 8, Piper’s owner, who has asked to remain anonymous, came home on July 31 to a shattered sliding glass door and found her dog covered in blood.

The woman told the news agency that she believes that Piper was protecting her other dogs from the burglar when she was shot in the chest – the bullet went through her body and into a leg, which had to be amputated because of the extensive damage.

Piper has recovered from the injury, and the amputation, and she continues to do her part to watch over the other dogs at her house. Her owner tells the news agency, “She’s the smartest dog I’ve ever known, ever worked with or ever had.”

The police are still investigating the frightening situation.
