On Monday, a dog in Merrimack, New Hampshire, suffered inside of a parked car while a man went shopping and had lunch. By the time that the authorities arrived to investigate the situation, the car’s interior temperature had climbed to 103 degrees, reports WMUR News.

An officer located the dog’s owner, identified as 66-year-old Leiland Stevens of Hampton Falls. Stevens had been eating and shopping at the Merrimack Premium Outlets while the police reports were being completed.

Stevens was arrested for animal cruelty, but released on a personal recognizance bail – his dog was taken to the police station for care.

A reminder – when it is even moderately warm outside, it is not safe to leave dogs inside of parked cars. Cracked windows do little to reduce the car interior temperature. If you see a dog inside of a parked vehicle, please contact animal control or the police to report the situation.

  1. Another summer is upon us and another round of ignorance. How can people NOT know what the heat will do to your pet? This happens every year and still they are clueless!
