An El Cajon, California, veterinary hospital is citing an electric blanket “malfunction” as the reason that a dog suffered severe burns during a routine knee surgery. As reported by 10 News, San Filippo’s boxer mix, Sofia, went to the Bastet Veterinary Hospital for surgery in May, and things appeared to be fine immediately afterward – but the damage done to her body was not visible until it was too late.

Filippo first noticed a few spots oozing on the side of her body six days after the procedure…in a few weeks the full extent of the damage was apparent. Sofia had suffered third and fourth degree burns over nearly half of her body. He told the news agency, “Just broke down crying … brought her in for knee surgery and my dog was barbecued.”

In June, Sofia died from sepsis and pneumonia. The veterinary hospital released a statement about the equipment malfunction which stole Sofia’s life:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sofia, which was a result of thermal burns derived from the malfunction of our patient warming system. We are committed to working with all involved parties to help recoup financial losses, and our hearts grieve along with Sofia’a family for their loss.”

  1. This is unbelievable, nobody noticed until days later when it was too late to do something? I would be suing also, it wouldn’t bring back my precious pup but at least there would be some sort of justice!
