A 70-year-old man in Long Island is accused of causing his dog to die – according to NBC New York, the four-year-old German shepherd was allegedly denied regular access to food, and when the dog was fed, it was forced to eat food that was inside of plastic newspaper bags. The man facing charges for the dog’s death is identified as Harold Nichols of Uniondale.
The cruel situation
In mid-December, Nichols contacted the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter to let them know that his shepherd was dead. When shelter staff responded to the man’s home, they found the dog’s body inside of an outdoor kennel which was wired shut. The deceased dog was severely underweight and had fly strikes on the ears. A necropsy of the dog’s body revealed plastic bags inside of the digestive tract.
Another dog, described as a shepherd puppy, was also found in an outdoor metal kennel – the puppy was malnourished and also receiving food inside of plastic bags.
The dog’s death has resulted in charges, including two counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide proper sustenance.
