In St. Francis, Minnesota, a devastating house fire claimed the lives of 13 Australian shepherds on Thursday. A passerby saw the flames and called the fire department. The home was a total loss.

According to CbsNews, most of the dogs were purebred show dogs and ranged from eight-months of age to 11 years-old. The homeowner, Jodi Dovel, owns Crystal Wind Aussies which breeds Australian shepherds. She has been breeding, raising and training the dogs for more than 20 years.

Twelve of their dogs were inside along with a friend’s dog, but despite the efforts of firemen, the dogs could not be saved. Two of the dogs were not at home.

The fire may have started on the main level of the home before spreading to the attic. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
