A 9-year-old child has been traumatized after a Detroit Police officer shot the little boy’s dog in front of him.

“I said it was my dog. I said can you help me find my dog?,” the child Elijah Hughs asked the officer.

In an interview with Fox News, Sonya Davis said the friendly 15-month-old pitbull mix, Stormy had escaped from her home as her 9-year-old nephew, Elijah, had been leashing up another pet, Bandit, for a walk. Davis’ son, De’Andre who had been outside, began a search for the dog. In the meanwhile, young Elijah flagged down a police officer and as he had done in the past, asked for help finding Stormy.

Not long after, De’Andre heard gunshots. As Stormy ran towards Elijah, officers who had responded to a 911 call about two large unleashed dogs, shot Stormy later stating

“as soon as he stepped out of the patrol car, ‘one of the dogs came running toward officer, charging at the officer’.”

The officers didn’t know if the dog was friendly and made the split second decision to shoot. It is not known if Animal Control had been called, who likely would have handled the situation differently. The officer who shot the dog is upset – especially after shooting Bandit in front of the child.

Stormy survived the shooting and was transported to Oakland Veterinary Referral Services in Bloomfield Hills. Detroit Dog Rescue has stepped up to help the family who are not able to afford the expensive treatment and surgery Bandit needs.

“She has a wound to her chest, but even more concerning is the wound to her jaw, which destroyed her lower jaw bone, as you can see in the x-ray,”posted the DDR Facebook page.

The family plans on filing a complaint with the Detroit Police claiming Bandit is a friendly and sweet dog and has never shown any aggression.

Veterinarians estimate recovery could take six to eight weeks, and her care could reach $8,000. The The Peppler Agency has offered to match the first $3,000, dollar for dollar.  A donation in any amount counts and can be made at DetroitDogRescue.com

We have been told police are investigating the incident.

  1. They can “investigate” all they want, but we all know nothing will happen to the cowardly officer who shot a – gasp – pit bull running toward him. Or was she running toward her little boy who had called her to him, scared-out-of-your-wits officer? How about the officer is made to help pay for the dog’s medical bills? It’s the least he could do.

  2. This is how the police respond to a child asking for help. They shoot the poor kid’s dog! If the officer is that “upset” about it he should offer to help with the vet costs. They always sat the dog was “charging” and they feared for their safety. What a bunch of Bull! Praying for the recovery of Bandit and I hope the family gets some sort of justice for this nightmare!

  3. Bully with a badge. He should have called Animal Control immediately……. He should personally pay for all the vet care expenses AND psychiatric counseling expenses for the traumatized children…..
There MUST be “dealing with animals” training as part of police training…….
Hope that Bandit and Stormy recover from this horrible experience and the children get the psychiatric counseling they will need to help them cope with this traumatic experience…….
