The death toll at an animal shelter in the Bahamas is much higher than was originally believed. As reported by CNN, the Humane Society of Grand Bahama lost 220 dogs and 50 cats – a total much higher than the 113 deaths initially reported.

The shelter supervisor told reporter Gustavo Valdes that staff tried to keep 300 dogs and 100 cats safe from the raging storm which was lashing the shelter, which was built in 2008. But the powerful hurricane proved to be too much for the shelter to take – the storm surge water came rushing in and employees, who had stayed at the facility to keep the animals safe, were forced to help each other get into the attic space to survive.

As the water level rose inside of the shelter, the barking and howling from the kenneled and caged dogs came to an end, leaving the crushing sound of silence. Tip Burrows, the shelter’s executive director, tells CNN that she is devastated by the lives lost, even though the staff had no way of predicting that the shelter, which had endured several storms in the past, would flood.

The rush of water claimed lives, in addition to the shelter’s food, medicine, medical equipment and vehicles.
