In Franklin, Indiana, a couple divorcing have been charged with letting their dog starve. Michael and Amanda Setser each face one count of animal cruelty.

According to WibcNews, the dog named Chuck died in January after Amanda moved out of the marital home. Ten days later, Amanda stated her husband told her he wanted to hurt her and everything she loved. The phone conversation had been recorded, but when Michael was questioned, he denied ever having a dog.

Police also believe Amanda could have picked up the dog and several cats, but never did, and the only real victim – Chuck the dog, had not been fed for at least two weeks. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joe Villanueva admits cases like this never get easier.

“In my 19 years of experience as a prosecutor, I have prosecuted my fair share of animal cruelty cases, and it never gets easier…

Crimes like these could be avoided if people would just show a little compassion and take their animals to the Johnson County Animal Shelter.”

If found guilty, the couple could be sentenced to jail of a year and fined $5,000.
