In Coachella, California, a woman caught on video dumping a bag of puppies into a dumpster was sentenced to jail on Wednesday. Deborah Culwell, 54, will spend one year in prison – 90 of which will be served under a work release.
According to Buzzfeed, Culwell pleaded guilty to all counts of animal cruelty after tossing seven three-day-old puppies in the large trash bin. One of the puppies did not survive. She was arrested in April after police identified her via the surveillance footage. When arrested, Culwell had 38 dogs in her home which were “not in good condition,” according to the police report.
Her story went viral after the release of the video showed her drive up to the trash bin in her white Jeep behind an auto store tossing the bag of puppies. That day, temperatures soared to over 90 degrees; it had been a Good Samaritan who found the puppies.
Riverside Animal Services cared for all of the dogs.
In addition to prison, Culwell will also serve seven years probation at which time she will not be allowed to own or keep any animals.
