A 30-year-old orca who lived at SeaWorld Orlando died suddenly on Monday. According to Fox News, the whale’s death was unexpected and thus far, unexplained. The whale, named Kayla, began to show signs of illness on Saturday and though she was receiving round-the-clock care, her condition continued to deteriorate.

In a statement, SeaWorld explained:

Her veterinarians immediately began treatment based on a physical examination. Although animal care specialists and veterinarians devoted around the clock attention to Kayla, she did not survive.”

There are still 20 orcas remaining at the SeaWorld parks – SeaWorld stopped their breeding program in 2016 after years of pressure from animal welfare activists. Kayla was born in captivity in 1988 in San Antonio. In a release, PETA stated:

When she was not yet 3 years old, she was torn away from her mother and moved to SeaWorld Ohio (which has since been shut down). She was later moved back to SeaWorld San Antonio, where she gave birth to Halyn. But she rejected her calf, as orcas in captivity have often been known to do. In 2006, Kayla was moved one last time: to SeaWorld Orlando in Florida. In 2008, 2-year-old Halyn died at the San Antonio park.

At 30 years of age, Kayla should have been in the prime of her life.
