A San Antonio man was arrested on Friday after authorities alleged he stabbed his girlfriend’s small dog and then used a pliers to pull and break off his teeth. Vernon Ortiz has been charged with felony animal cruelty which includes torturing an animal.
According to the San Antonio Press, Ortiz, 40, tortured the Dachshund mix named Cosmo because the dog had urinated on the bed. When police arrived, the dog had facial injuries and problems with his teeth.
“As we did the investigation, we found the 40-year-old suspect, it appears had assaulted the animal with a 6-inch hunting knife. In addition to that, he had also used pliers to break off the canines of the animal to keep it from biting him,” stated the assistant director for San Antonio’s Animal Care Services, Shannon Sims.
During the investigation, Ortiz allegedly admitted to stabbing the dog. Cosmo received emergency care, and has been reunited with his owner.
If found guilty, Ortiz could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 maximum fine.
