Bone broth – the easy food you can make for your dog

Bone broth

I recently began making bone broth for our dogs. I had heard about the recent “fad” of consuming bone broth, but honestly never considered trying to make it myself. As most of the regular Pet Rescue Report readers know, we have had a long five weeks, dealing with the unexpected (and mostly unexplained) paralysis of our German shepherd and it was her ongoing issues that made me decide to give bone broth a try.

I opted to give it a go for a couple of reasons. Chesney decided (don’t ask me why) that she no longer wanted to drink plain water. Obviously, it is critical for your dog to take in an adequate amount of water each day so I needed to figure out something enticing for her. We started with goat’s milk being added to water (she loved it!) and though it was working, I wondered if long term consumption of the goat’s milk might be bad.

So I looked into bone broth – not only because I had heard that dogs like it, but because I had read about the potential benefits from the broth’s collagen, glucosamine, and trace minerals – so, why not? Let me just say, it is much easier to make than I anticipated, especially if you have a crock pot.

I have made more batches of bone broth than I can count – here is what I do:

Place bones (chicken or beef or whatever you want to pick up – I have used chicken, beef marrow bones and beef neck bones) into a crock pot.

Add in a few carrots (3-4 and I don’t even bother peeling them – just cut off the end)

Toss in a bit of garlic (If you are afraid of garlic you can skip it but I have never had any issues – check out this article for more information).

Pour in a glug or two of apple cider vinegar (this is important as it helps break down the bones).

Cover the bones with water and turn the crock pot on high for one hour, then low for 15-24 hours.

At the end, let it cool and then use a strainer over a steel bowl and pour the liquid in. When you have the strained liquid, discard the bones and then fill glass jars with the bone broth. Place them in the refrigerator and in a few hours it will be nicely gelled.

If you used bones that had meat on them (I have made a few batches with drumsticks) consider making a tasty add in treat for your dog. I use my food processor and puree some apples, spinach and carrots, then shred the meat and voila! tasty soft dog food.

This is the easiest thing to do and our dogs LOVE it so much. Added perk? My two non-stop shedding shepherds have basically stopped shedding.  If you have a finicky eater, adding a bit of bone broth to their food will likely help.

I am not here to make claims about how amazing bone broth is (nutritionally) but there are some astounding claims out there (click here to read some of them). Whether or not it is all it’s cracked up to be is not for me to determine, but my dogs love it and they aren’t shedding as much, so I call that a win.

If you’ve ever thought about trying to make it – please give it a try because it truly is easy!

Note: Primalvore has stated that dogs should receive about one ounce of broth for every 10 pounds of body weight.

  1. If you want to get the most out of bone broth using a pressure cooker works best I have put entire turkeys in a pressure cooker when I’ve had a sick dog and all but the drumstick legs smush between your fingers at the end of the cooking time. This is the real nutrition in the process. But I have seen the wonders of bone broth. I don’t know all of the facts either but it’s a wonderful thing
