Biologists in Florida are investigating a deadly disease in two wildcat species including endangered panthers and bobcats. The Florida Fish and Wildcat Conservation confirmed neurological damage after surveillance videos showed the capture of eight panthers (kittens) and one adult bobcat having trouble walking and with their coordination.
On Wednesday, WinkNews reported a similarity with domestic dogs; one family whose dog named Harley had trouble with coordination and weakened hindquarters recently. Veterinarians tried treatment on the dog, and at the time thought the dog suffered from canine degenerative myelopathy, however the diagnosis was never confirmed. Sadly, Harley did not survive.
The family live in the Golden Gate Estates which is known as a panther area. In addition, more families have since come forward stating they had to euthanize their dogs that demonstrated the same symptoms. It is feared whatever is happening to these animals continues to spread among Southwest Florida panthers.
Biologists are currently testing for toxins, including rat pesticides, infectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies as possible causes.
