In a heartbreaking situation, a sweet 15-year-old golden retriever mix  named Rusty was surrendered to the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center on Tuesday. The notes about his surrender included the following:

17-sep-19 – note – 09/17/19 16:17- owner is surrendering because the dog has had difficulty walking on his back legs for about 6 months. He’s gotten to the point of not being able to use them most of the time. .”
if you can help him!”

According to volunteers, Rusty’s owner requested the dog be euthanized.

“He’s a sweet old man! He was so nice and friendly. ..We need to work super fast and get him an email to save his life. He is listed as a 15-year-old guy.

Check out more photos and short video here.

Rusty weighs 38 pounds and needs a village to share his plight. Please notify approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. At a time when Rusty needs his family the most, they left him at a shelter and asked someone else to be there for his last moments. We can do better.

  1. Too bad these owners didn’t think to consult a veterinarian. Medications, physical therapy and a cart would have made a HUGE difference in Rusty’s life quality…….

Poor precious treasure Rusty, failed in every way possible by your humans……. I hope that you are able to be rehomed by the few humans who DO care about you and value your life…….

  2. If your dog gets to this point and his quality of life is non existent then man up and do the right thing. You don’t dump your ailing senior dog on the shelter! You take responsibility for your pet and do what is necessary. If nothing more can be done you owe it to them to be there when they go to the Rainbow Bridge. People disgust me!
