Senior black dog overlooked and forgotten

A beautiful, purebred German shepherd seems to have been forgotten at a busy California animal control facility. Blacky, a nine-year-old senior, has been at the Long Beach Animal Care Services facility since June…months have passed and he is still there, overlooked and passed by. Is this gorgeous senior a victim of the dreaded “black dog” syndrome?

In July, shelter staff provided some information about this handsome senior dog:

Special Need: Senior

Friendly and social, senior boy. Recommend bathing with anti-seborrhea shampoo; rec senior wellness blood panel; ataxia will be chronic, currently appears comfortable but may need analgesics PRN- JDYER 07/23/19 11:22

A networking advocate offers additional insight about this homeless dog:

This gorgeous gent is Blacky, an approximately 9 year old un-neutered boy who is a svelte 83 pounds. He was found as a stray and seems to have some hind end weakness for which he is being treated. He is very adventurous despite his slight limitations. He’s easy going and doesn’t seem too interested in toys; he’d rather explore and see what’s going on

Have you heard of “Black Dog” syndrome? It’s an actual, and unfortunate, “thing.” Wikipedia describes this bias as:

Black dog syndrome or big black dog syndrome is a phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals.[1] Animal shelters often use the term BBD, or big black dog, to describe the type of larger dark-colored mixed-breed said to be typically passed over by adopters

Saving Blacky

Surely there are people out there who can appreciate Blacky’s striking good looks. Though he is a senior, he could very well have many years of life ahead of him. Please help this deserving senior dog find a home by sharing this article with his adoption information.

  1. The stigma that Is attached to seniors is sad and unwarranted. I rescued /adopted a senior and he is the most appreciative and loving soul. The patience that is required with any rescue is no different than with a senior. It is such a character building experience too. Ur heart opens bigger than you have ever imagined it could and the return u will receive from your new family member for saving them is unmeasured. Someone rescue this precious soul and enrich your life too! This baby needs a HERO!

  2. Has anyone contacted Frosted Faces or No Paws Left Behind?

I don’t know who to contact at either group, just that they can (& often do) help with seniors and medically fragile cases…..

I hope a rescue group can save Blacky. He deserves to be treated as a beloved family member for however long a time he has left and not die in the shelter alone, afraid and (worst of all) unloved…….
