A badly injured senior dog, too hurt to move, laid in a Riverview, Michigan, yard for days without help. As reported by WXYZ News, if not for Shawna Justice, who happened to notice the ailing dog near death over the weekend, the outcome would have been heartbreaking.

Justice saw the old dog on the ground in someone’s yard on Saturday – until the dog moved his head, Justice believed that she was looking at a dog who had died. She told the news agency, “To think he has spent God knows how long in that backyard dying like that is a very sickening thing.” Justice reached out to the local authorities for help and was told that they were aware of the dog…

The police told her that the owners have been contacted before and they told officers that the dog was 18 years of age and suffering from hip dyplasia – supposedly, “nothing could be done.” Officer eventually arrived to the property where the dog was, but they told Justice that animal control would not come out until Monday.

Justice was unwilling to leave the dog to suffer alone, so she waited until the owners showed up. Fortunately, the dog’s owners were willing to surrender ownership and the old boy was taken to a veterinarian for care.

As it turns out, the dog, named Jake, did not have hip dysplasia…and very little arthritis. Instead, he was suffering from a shattered hip. On Sunday, the Animal Resource Funding Foundation described the dog’s injuries:

Just when you see neglect and think no it can’t get worse then you see this.

Meet Jake 2.0. He was found starved, with a shattered hip. His femur bone is jammed into his pelvis. His jaw shivers from pain. His teeth are so rotted that it goes into his gums.

He will need surgery. He has a lot of life in him and loves everyone. Dr. Lucretia Hodge Greear thinks he may be about 10. He only weighs 28 pounds.

Funds are being raised on Jake’s behalf – already, over $1600 has been donated to help him receive the care that he needs. Jake’s veterinarian told the news agency, “I’m inspired by him because his issues are treatable. He’s not a 19 or 20-year-old dog that needs to be put down. He’s dehydrated. He’s hungry, and he’s in pain.”

The authorities are investigating to see if charges are warranted against Jake’s former owners.
