Baby sea turtles burned to death on Florida beach

On Satellite Beach, a woman walking along the coastline stumbled across several baby sea turtles that appeared to have been burned to death.

According to the Miami Herald, Rhonda Wundke and her husband had been walking on High Tower Beach over the weekend and spotted a dead baby turtle. Just a few feet away, was a burned grave with more dead baby turtles; charred wood surrounded their lifeless little bodies.

Rhonda tweeted the disturbing news to the Melbourne Police:

“I want to report a crime. These baby turtles were found at High Tower Beach today 9/1/19. They have been set in fire. Baby turtles and over there place burned even found an egg. I’m saddened and very angry!

I found one dead turtle, then we came upon the burnt grave. Then there were just many more burnt, dead turtles here and there.. the charred wood was around them. Burnt babies everywhere.”

Twitter followers quickly responded. Wundke tagged both the Melbourne City Police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It is not known if an investigation has been initiated.

“As you can see I was texting out of shock,” Wundke followed up on Wednesday. “It was a nightmare in person to see. The storm surges [from Hurricane Dorian] I’m sure have placed these babies into the ocean to rest.”

Loggerheads, green turtles, Leatherbacks, Kemp’s Ridleys and Hawksbill turtles are the most common turtles seen in Florida. Sadly, they face threats of extinction because of nesting encroachments, pollution and environmental hazards.
