Baby elephant tied to his mother collapses while mom gives tourist rides

A baby elephant, tied to his mother by a rope and chain, collapsed in exhaustion from the extreme heat while his mother gave rides to tourists in eastern Thailand late last week. The elephant calf, believed to be no more than one-year-old, had been attached around his neck to his mother and suddenly wobbled, fell and rolled on the ground as temperatures in the city reached 104 degrees.

According to the Daily Mail, the video, filmed by a tourist at the Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens, the baby appeared to have been exhausted from walking the area where tourists paid to go for a ride on her mother.

“There are many more baby elephants tied with their mother walking around with tourists at their backs enjoying under the heat of the sun while these elephants are suffering. This one baby elephant was so exhausted and you can see the mother comforting and encouraging her to stand,” the tourist sadly explained.

A spokesperson for the Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens denied the elephants were being mistreated and stated all of the animals are cared for by staff veterinarians.

What is even more distressing is the news, just a month prior, that a two-year-old elephant died at a show in Phuket, Thailand. The young pachyderm was so undernourished, his back legs snapped while performing. The calf had been forced to kick a soccer ball and balance on a small podium. When his front legs became stuck in a mud puddle while performing, he fell.

The calf, named Dumbo, had been forced to perform three shows a day and was reported to have been suffering from a severe infection before his grievous injury. Dumbo died three days later.
