In British Columbia, along the Sunshine Coast two baby bear cubs were rescued after their mother was struck by a vehicle and killed. The cubs are being cared for by a wildlife organization in Langley.
According to Global News, the mother bear suffered a severe spinal injury. The driver who struck the bear stopped but did not report the accident. When a Good Samaritan stopped and called the Conservation Officer Service (COS), an officer arrived and euthanized the mother bear. Two of the three baby bears were captured; the third one quickly fled and ran up a tree.
Officers set traps, but the baby bear has not been seen and officials are worried that the cub could have been killed by a predator or hit by a car.
The surviving cubs are now being cared for at Langley’s Critter Care and are expected to release the bears back into the wild.
