Another marine animal death has been attributed to trash…the most recent victim is a dolphin found this month in Florida. According to the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, the female rough toothed dolphin, found on Fort Myers Beach, had plastic bags and part of a balloon in her stomach.

The wildlife agency stopped short of placing all blame on the plastic trash found in the dolphin’s stomach:

Although a significant finding, there are many additional factors to consider, such as underlying illness, disease and maternal separation, before a final cause of stranding and death for the dolphin can be determined. Samples collected during necropsy will be sent for analysis to help with this determination.

But still advised that single use plastics are harming the ocean and animals:

This finding highlights the need to reduce single use plastic and to not release balloons into the environment.

Please do your part to help the earth and her inhabitants! Pick up trash, limit your use of single use plastics, and spread the word that balloons kill!

Balloon releases must be stopped. You can take action – a petition has been created to stop the traditional balloon release at the upcoming Indy 500 race. Please take a moment to sign and share here.

  1. I don’t know why there aren’t more school, church, and government programs to pick up the trash from the beaches! This would give thousands of time-wasting people something “worthwhile” to do!
