In Mayville, New York a dog owner who hanged his dog from a tree will spend one year in jail. On Monday, Robert Overton Jr. was sentenced in Chautauqua County Court, where he earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty.
In April 2018, police arrested Overton after witnesses saw him hanging the dog from a tree in late November or early December of 2017. The horrible cruelty drew attention from all over the country with many people offering a reward for the apprehension of the responsible person.
According to WgrzNews, Overton claimed the dog, named Champagne, became aggressive on three separate occasions and had behaved aggressively towards his young daughter. He told police that he made a “life or death decision, choosing my kids over the animal.”
Overton will be the first offender to be placed on the Animal Abuser Registry in Chautauqua County.
