Angry villagers are believed to be responsible for seven elephant deaths in Sri Lanka. As reported by BBC News, experts think that the elephants were poisoned – necropsies will be performed on the bodies to determine if the poisoning theory is true.
The elephant bodies were found late last week in the Habarana Forest Reserve; one of the deceased elephants was pregnant. Experts surmise that villagers are angry that the elephants have destroyed their crops.
Conflict between the pachyderms and villagers has grown as farm land continues to encroach on the elephants’ habitat. As reported by Yahoo News, the elephant population in Sri Lanka has fallen drastically since the beginning of the last century.
On Monday, another elephant was discovered dead from gunshot wounds in the country’s central reserve; it is unknown if the death is related.
