Heartbreaking video of dolphin mourning loss of her baby

Humans do not hold the rights to feelings…all animals have the capacity to love and grieve. A heartbreaking video, released earlier this month by See Through Canoe, shows a dolphin who is mourning the loss of her calf, who was likely killed by a boat’s propeller.

Via Twitter, See Through Canoe wrote:

Mother not ready to let go of her dead calf and pushing it through the intracoastal waterway.

The company offers a warning to boaters about the harm that can be inflicted upon our ocean friends:

Many people assume that because dolphins are fast, they can get out of the way of power boats. Even the adults get hit regularly but the calves are especially vulnerable since they can’t swim very fast and have to surface a Lot more frequently than the adults. When you see dolphins, don’t just blast right past them in your power boat like the boat in this video, go around and give them some space.

Last August, an Orca who lost her calf carried the baby’s body for an unprecedented 17 days. The whale, Tahlequah, did her utmost to prevent her calf’s body from sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Her agonizing vigil broke hearts across the world.

Boaters, please be mindful of your surroundings.

Rest in peace little one.
