A former Alabama college athlete has been accused of beating a duck with a baseball bat. Thomas “Landon” Grant, 19, faces aggravated animal cruelty charges; additional arrests  are expected.

According to Al.com, a warrant for the second suspect has been issued. The disturbing event occurred on May 5 when a white Muscovy  duck was taken out of the pond at Central Alabama Community College by a group of student athletes. The baseball players had been in attendance at a party and went to the pond and took one of the ducks.

One of the suspects hit the duck with a baseball bat and then took the ailing bird back to an apartment where he stuffed it in a bag and continued to beat the duck to near death – contending he had decided to “put it out of its misery.” With the dying duck in the bag, the students threw the suffering animal into the woods.

A coach heard the commotion and found the fatally injured duck still alive. He rushed it to a vet where it was humanely euthanized. School officials were notified, and an investigation was launched.

Grant has been freed on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in July.
