It has been two long years since 28 German shepherds were seized from an animal cruelty situation, and they are finally available for adoption. The New Hampshire SPCA broke the news via social media, writing:
German Shepherd’s held in Protective Custody at the New Hampshire SPCA for nearly two years, finally surrendered!
On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, the New Hampshire SPCA received a signed surrender form finally releasing 28 German Shepherds from Protective Custody and giving them a chance to find loving forever homes.
In a news release, Lisa Dennison, Executive Director of the New Hampshire SPCA, commented on the dogs who have been in the shelter’s custody while their owner awaited trial:
“This is the day that we have been waiting on for far too long. We took some of these dogs into custody in December of 2017 and the rest on January 2, 2018. The system has failed them at every turn, but today we can finally celebrate that they are ours and soon they will be able to be adopted into loving, forever homes. And finally, we will be able to breathe again.”
Shelter staff did their utmost to keep the dogs from going “kennel crazy” during their lengthy stay. The dogs were walked as frequently as possible and provided with constant care. The dogs are finally available for adoption because their former owner, Jennifer Choate, surrendered them.
According to the animal welfare agency, Choate will plead guilty to just two counts of animal cruelty in court on October 11. The release states:
She will not be able to breed dogs for five years in the State of New Hampshire. She will also not be required to pay over $600,000 in restitution that the New Hampshire SPCA would have been owed.
Dennison stated:
“As part of a plea agreement we have agreed to waive all restitution. We know by experience that typically a very small percentage of restitution is ever actually paid. Getting the dogs released was our highest priority.”
