In Flintshire, North Wales, a video showing an “exhausted” emaciated pony collapsing on his back after rearing up backwards, has set off a firestorm to rescue “Gary” the pony.

According to Wales Online, the video was captured by Nadine Williams who spotted the pony tied up at a retail shopping district in Queensferry. A campaign to save the pony has been launched; Sandra Kvaerneng Stolp, the owner of the Whispering Willows Sanctuary, traveled 150 miles to save the pony and bring him back to the rescue farm.

Stolp offered to buy Gary from his owner, however when she arrived, the RSPCA had taken the pony to a veterinarian posting the following update on the organization’s Facebook page.

The RSPCA have taken the horse from the custody of the cruel abusers in the last hour, I will keep this petition updated with the outcome of this matter. Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition and who has made their voices heard, you have all saved this beautiful animals life.”

The owner of the pony allegedly demanded $2,600 to purchase the pony.

A later update from the RSPCA indicates the pony has been returned to his owners. The RSPCA issued the following statement:

“We are looking into this issue and we are unable to go into details for legal reasons. However in order to seize any animal, an independent vet must deem it is suffering before we can legally take it into our care. In some cases, we may not like the conditions animals are being kept in, but we can only act within the law.”
