The movie, “A Dog’s Way Home” is a feel good movie  and just what we need at the turbulent beginning of 2019. The Sony picture, which hit the theaters Thursday, celebrates the human-animal bond, the joy of living with our canine companions and includes that special emphasis our veterans have with dogs and the animals selfless loyalty and service. Tragically, the movie also features a dark side of society.

The title character and narrator, a rescued pit bull mix Bella (Bryce Dallas Howard), is adopted by Lucas and his mother, Terri, a veteran. Lucas works as a therapy dog at a veteran’s hospital where Terri receives services. Bella often accompanies Terri and quickly became very popular with veterans – providing them with companionship and comfort.

Bella adores Lucas and her loyalty and love, but unfortunately her life takes a terrible turn after the city of Denver, where Bella lives, has a breed-specific law that bans any dog with pit bull type characteristics. For her own protection, Lucas and Terri transport their dog to a new home 400 miles away – making sure she is safe from possible euthanasia if she remained in Denver.

It’s Bella’s journey home that becomes the challenge. She didn’t understand why she was sent away; only that she wanted to go home. During her difficult journey, she wound up living with a homeless veteran for months and after the man died in his sleep, Bella was left chained to the dead man and nearly died from dehydration.

The movie clearly explains through heartbreaking illustration, the terrible plight of innocent dogs labeled “pit bull” breeds. Tragically many cities have breed specific bans, and animal experts, animal behaviorists and scientist agree there is no evidence that one breed of dog is more dangerous than another breed.  Bans like this force dogs out of their homes and into shelters where the most popular breeds of dogs – pit bulls – are euthanized more than any other breeds.

Check it out.
