Mark a UPS driver in Bozeman as a dog’s hero. The man recently stripped down to his underwear, climbed into a rowboat and rescued a crying and frightened pooch trapped in the ice.

According to the Great Falls Tribune, Ryan Arens had been on his route just before Christmas when he heard a dog screaming and crying. It was sunset, and he couldn’t see anything, but after delivering his package to a home on Johnson Road, Arens drove to the other side of the pond.

That’s when Arens spotted the dog trapped in the ice about 10 to 15 feet from the shore. An older man had been in a rowboat trying unsuccessfully to reach the dog. Within minutes came the brave rescue.

“I stripped to my boxers and got the guy out of the boat. Then I slid the boat out onto the ice, using it to distribute my weight, I shimmied out to where the ice was thin,” Arens stated.

He broke through the ice, fell into the 16-feet deep water and swam for the dog who was just about to go under. He grabbed her collar, slid across the ice and pulled both he and the dog out of the icy water. Both the dog and the water entered the older man’s home and jumped into the warm shower.

Moments later the sheriff and animal control arrived, but there’s more to the story.

Not only did Arens go back to work, he delivered another 20 packages, and called rescuing the dog “the highlight” of his 14-year career with UPS, citing animals are just his weakness.

As for the dog he rescued; her name is Sadie, and on Arens route delivering packages, he saw the dog in the backup of the owner’s pickup.

“She was freaking out, and when he let her out she ran to me. She must have remembered me. It sure made me feel good,” he said.

And so Sadie, the two-and-a-half-year old wirehaired pointing griffon, had the coolest way of thanking her rescuer.

We all thank Ryan too; we love heroes to those who cannot speak.

  1. This is the part of the United States That I have loved and respected all of my life… You don’t see the massive Abuse and Torture in this part of the Country ( mayabe because it is less populated ) but I in my heart think it is because hearts are softer and People have a gentle soul!!! Where I live the rural US Post Office Driver carries Dog biscuits in his delivery truck and every dong on his route is so excited to see him…. Bless this UPS driver …. he should get an award for bravery for the UPS Regional Office!!! A paid day off!!!

  2. This UP driver did a selfless thing and should be recognized by the UPS Regional Office. Some nice gesture on their part for what he did should be a wonderful reward he can enjoy. Nice that the dog,Sadie, recognized him and wanted to greet him. Dogs remember those who are kind to them. Makes you feel good to read stories about people and dogs like this.

  3. Thankfully, there are heroes everywhere, but they don’t often make the news.
Many prayers and blessings for the “unsung” heroes that walk among us every day and make this world a better place!
