In Garfield Heights, Ohio, a 79-year-old woman sentenced to 10 days in jail for feeding stray cats after the animals’ owner abandoned them will not go to jail after all. Nancy Segula had been scheduled to spend ten days in jail beginning August 11 at 9:00 a.m, but on Tuesday, the judge suspended her sentence.

According to Fox News, Nancy had been charged with contempt of court for continuing to feed the stray cats after receiving three previous citations ordering her not to feed the animals. As part of the agreement, Nancy is required to remove any items in her yard that provide shelter for the cats and has been ordered to stop feeding them.

Recently both the Garfield Heights Animal Warden and animal advocates have been at Nancy’s home removing the stray cats and kittens. The cats will be spayed and neutered and offered for adoption.

  1. Garfield Heights Animal Warden and animal advocates should have removed the cats the first time they went out there to give the woman a summons. What did they expect her to do with them? Was she supposed to find homes for them herself? Was she really supposed to stop feeding them and watch them die? What a bunch of BS. I’m glad they came to their senses and suspended her sentence.

  2. From what I have read in the posts related to this case, the cats in question were not strays. They had been abandoned by a previous owner. It seems to me that if anybody should go to jail it should be the piece of garbage who abandoned these cats. Why are authorities not pursuing those assholes? This lady deserves a medal, not persecution. The judge in this case has no business being a judge as he/she obviously has no judgement. Also, ordering her to remove any shelter and stop feeding the cats constitutes animal cruelty in my book and this judge should face charges accordingly.
