A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for killing 42 wild burros in the Mojave Desert.

An anonymous donor has pledged $30,000 to fund the reward for information that leads to the person(s) who shot the burros along Interstate 15.  The Humane Society stated a donor from its burro protection initiative, the Platero Project, put up the money making the total reward $50,000. The Humane Society donated $2,500, the Bureau of Land Management offered another $10,000, along with the American Wild Horse Campaign, Return to Freedom and the Cloud Foundation organizations.

Burros are wild donkeys and considered to be a symbol of the American Southwest. They are protected under federal law by the Wild And Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.

Branding, harassing or killing a wild burro is punishable by a fine of $2,000 and one year in jail for each offense. The BLM continues to investigate and are being helped by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

  1. My ?: WHY???

Whoever did this to these innocent animals is absolutely disgusting and cruel. There is a reserved spot in Hell waiting for this POS where they will burn forever for their cruelty……. hope they get there ASAP after dying a horrible death alone, in pain, afraid and (worst of all), unloved…….

  2. I looked and looked but nearly 3 years later no one has been arrested even though the reward went to $58,000. I think it was BLM/Wildlife Services who did it, they hunt horses with helicopters why not shoot a bunch of burro’s. It’s also possible a rich rancher who’s land butts up to the Mojave Desert paid to have it done. But something stinks that the culprit hasn’t been arrested.
