In Groveland, Massachusetts, 28 golden retrievers rescued from an animal cruelty investigation have arrived at Sweet Paws Rescue. The breeder of the dogs facing four counts of felony animal cruelty was ordered to surrender 28 dogs. More cruelty charges are currently pending.

The adorable puppies will soon be available for adoption, however new pet parents will be faced with health challenges since the puppies are likely related which means genetic problems likely to surface as the pups mature.

For most of the dogs, it was the first time their paws had ever touched grass or walked on leashes. Prior to their rescue, all of the dogs had only been used for breeding – 11 females, three males and a litter of puppies are already receiving basic care, love and socialization opportunities.

A 17 year investigation results in the surrender of 28 Golden Retrievers from a Massachusetts Breeder, frequently seen online with AKC associations. This breeder has already been charged with four counts of felony animal cruelty and has dozens of pending felony cruelty charges in this open and ongoing case. As an organization, we cannot comment on specifics or jurisdiction. These dogs have a host of medical issues: ear infections, unvaccinated, parasites, a series of genetic issues including heart murmurs and eye afflictions, matted with wounds of unknown origin, not spayed or neutered, and not socialized.

According to the rescue organization, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office launched an investigation in February after a woman arrived at Tufts Veterinary Emergency Treatment and Specialties in Walpole with a dead dog.

As of now, the pups are not available for adoption. Officials say the dogs, who are not socialized, will first need behavioral evaluations and medical care. Check the Sweet Paws website for adoption updates.
