In Calhoun County, Michigan, the owner of 17 dogs is alleged to have left them outside in sub-zero temperatures with minimal shelter and frozen food and water. On Thursday, wind chills dipped to -40 degrees F. when authorities were notified about barking dogs in apparent distress.
According to WbckNews, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s officers attempted to contact the homeowner and were not successful. After a search warrant was issued, the dogs were seized and transported to the Calhoun County Animal Shelter where they were examined by a veterinarian. The dogs “appeared to be in distress.”
The dogs were rescued with the help of the Battle Creek Police Department Animal Control, Michigan Humane Society, Huron Valley Humane Society, Calhoun County Animal Shelter, Emmett Township Department of Public Safety, and the Calhoun County Special Response Team.
The owner of the dogs is suspected of breeding the dogs to fight. Police are expected to seek animal cruelty charges. The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s detective division at 269.781.0880 or Silent Observer at 269.781.9700.
