On Sunday night, a 13-year-old Lab fell down a deep ravine and spent most of the night trapped because he was not able to go up or down. The Pierce County, Washington dog, named Pepsi, waited patiently for help – his family climbed down to stay with him until rescuers arrived.

According to the West Pierce Fire and Rescue, the 120 pound black Labrador retriever, would need to be carried up by a litter.

“The embankments over here are very steep. There’s a lot of deadfalls, a lot downed brush, so anytime that rescues to on rope, it’s very dangerous.” stated West Pierce Captain Steve Vukich.

The rescue attempt took several hours, but Pepsi came up safely strapped into the litter.

“Pepsi fell over the embankment behind Zircon Drive last night and his owners were not able to retrieve him due to the steep and uneven terrain. He is over 100 pounds and 13 years old, so he was not able to make it back up on his own.

After attempting to find the best access point, we decided to use a rope rescue system. Shortly thereafter, Pepsi was on his way up the hill with his family behind him…”

Many thanks to the heroes that are here for all of us – no matter what the species.

Pepsi was not injured and is reportedly doing well and resting.
