In a heartbreaking post on social media, the Community Animal Rescue and Adoption, posted  that at 120 cats were euthanized on Sunday following former employees having been fired on Saturday after learning plans were being made to kill every cat at the shelter.

According to the Community Animal Rescue and Adoption (C.A.R.A), veterinarian examinations of the cats revealed cats testing positive for Calicirivus:

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we inform our community and our supporters that we have had a Calicivirus outbreak in our cattery. Unfortunately, this is one of the biggest fears of any rescue. Calicivirus is an airborne disease that is extremely contagious, particularly in an overpopulated cattery.

Immediately upon our veterinarian getting a positive Calicivirus test result and under their advice, our cattery was closed to visitors and for adoptions/intake in October. After reaching out to other shelters and experts in the sheltering business, we learned that this travesty has happened to shelters in other locations.”

According to WjtvNews, one of the six caregivers asked to leave the facility stated that some of the cats tested had come back negative for the virus.

“I understand it’s a terrible virus and it spreads. I just wish I knew for a fact that all options had been exhausted before they all got put down,” stated former employee Kelli Ware.

Calicivirus is treatable and can be prevented with a vaccination raising more questions as to why the cats in the facility were not inoculated for the virus.

“There were a lot [of cats] who couldn’t say ‘Hey I’m fine… I’m not sick.'” Kelli added.

  1. These EVIL VETERINARIES, “SO CALLED” SHELTERS are EVIL, HEARTLESS, and to me MAKE NO SENSE KEEP these PLACES OPENED. CATS and DOGS are well off on the streets, their colonies, living on their own than in FILTHY CAGES, TERRORIZED by the ones that should be taking care of them with LOVE and COMPACTION. STOP THE KILLINGS. STOP THE ABUSERS.

  2. SORRY BUT I AGREE with the individual that left the “RESCUE” and Yes Why weren’t the cats in need at a RESCUE vaccinated??? A lack of funding, interest, or Just plane NEGLECT!!! on the part of the administration !!! FUNDING MISAPPROPRIATION!!! Mississippi is ACTUALLY one of the STATES that the Horrific Abuse , Neglect, Torture goes unnoticed by the Law enforcement and citizens… THIS IS SIMPLY SICKENING!!!

  3. I am a veterinary technician! There is no need to kill cats with calcivirus ! One they should have been vaccinated! Why not! This can be treated with antibiotics and supportive care ! I have done rescue for many years and treated cats with calicivirus ! Successfully! This is an outrageous disgrace and a lie! Pure cruelty and a travesty!

  4. I guess nobody wanted to invest the time and the money to help these cats, it was easier to just kill them all! This is disgusting. Close the whole organization down, they aren’t fit to be called a shelter!

  5. Sounds like there needs to be major “housecleaning” of the people that run that shelter. They have no brains! RIP furbabies, you didn’t need to die.

  6. Why such a hurry to do this? I am sure if they posted they would have raised the money to test each cat. This makes me sick! I hope they are closed down! I wouldn’t want to donate to them in error. Just another example of humans throw away mentality!
