On Thursday afternoon, a man who was walking his dog in Houston, Texas, was struck by a vehicle being driven by a 12-year-old girl. Both the man and his dog were killed. According to multiple sources, the child’s father is now facing a homicide charge.
As reported by Fox News, 42-year-old Tomas Mejia is charged with negligent homicide and endangering a child because he allowed his daughter to take the wheel of a Ford Explorer in the parking lot of an apartment complex. According to Mercury News, Mejia was letting his daughter “practice” driving. A police report states that the girl accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and accelerated at a high speed into the man who was walking his dog, before striking a tree.
The man who died after the SUV hit him is identified as 40-year-old Enrique Vazquez – the dog he was walking died shortly after being struck.
