A North Carolina woman who stepped up to take in pets who were in danger from Hurricane Florence may now face charges for her good deed. According to multiple sources, Tammie Hedges, of Crazy’s Claws n Paws, took in cats and dogs from families in areas due to be impacted by the massive storm, and now local officials want to charge her for operating an unregistered shelter.

The situation

Hedges took in a total of 27 cats and dogs who were in danger of drowning – the animals were housed in cages at a warehouse on Route 581, reported WAVY News. She told the news agency why she offered to care for the pets:

“The goal was to make sure they were not out there drowning. We had an elderly couple, they were evacuating that afternoon, and there was no way they could take 18 animals with them.”

The threats

Despite the dangerous situation, county officials apparently wanted pets to only be in “registered” shelter space. After the storm passed through the area, Wayne County’s animal services manager Frank Sauls phoned Hedges and informed her that the animals had to be turned over or he would obtain a warrant. Though Hedges surrendered the animals, she may still be charged.

No good deed goes unpunished

Though Hedges has acknowledged that the warehouse space was not a registered shelter, she believes that what she did was right. She said, “We’re not just gonna let (the animals) suffer and die and drown.”

  1. Oh come on! Give this woman a pass, she went above and beyond to save lives and this is how she is repaid? I shudder to think what is going to happen to these poor animals now that the “authorities” have taken over. I hope these families are able to get their pets back when they are able to get back in their homes!

    • I agree with you…… “common sense is not so common”……

She saves lives & is charged??? What about charging the cruel POS’s who abandoned their animals???

  2. How come this good soul person must be charged for doing a good things…while there’s no charge for some people who abbandoned their pets…
    It’s not fair…

    • I think those that left thier dogs for example outside in a cage in 3ft of water are the ones that need to be fined!!! Fined for ignorance and sheer stupidity! What this woman did she did from her good heart!!! The establishment really sucks at times with thier rules! If you are saving a life no matter what it matters!

  3. WTF why are u complaining she HELPED THESE ANIMALS From drowning u short on cash OMFG she has a bigger heart then u fucks just wanting to charge her for helping save animals u sound like animals don’t DON’T MEAN shit to U ….. if u are charging this lady for helping save animal bless her big huge heart ❤️ for SAVING THESE ANIMALS how fucking disgusting this is tragic time for animals and your worried about how she’s not legal !!!! ????????

  4. THESE LAWS SUCK! THIS WOMAN WILL PROBABLY GET MORE OF A PUNISHMENT THAN AN ABUSER. WORRY ABOUT THE DAMN PISS ASS ABUSERS AND NOT WHAT THIS WOMAN DID. I AM REALLY SICK OF THIS KIND OF SHIT WORRIED ABOUT THE WRONG CRAP. LEAVE THE LADY ALONE BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME DAMN THING. ONES WHO WANT TO PROSECUTE THIS WOMEN YOU NEED TO BE TIED TO A TREE IN THE WOODS AND LEFT FOR DEAD. CLASSIFY YOURSELVES AS ANIMAL ABUSERS.

  5. I can’t believe how brain dead these people are to try to punish a person for doing what you should have been ding since the beginning. You’re just being vindictive towards this women for having a heart and brain. All the officials should get fired for stupidity.

  6. While I understand the need to have “registered” shelters, doesn’t anyone know the meaning of EMERGENCY? I can’t believe this is happening to someone who is doing something so beautiful. Are these so called “officials” going to accept dead animals rather than endorse or support this woman? Despicable! They should be removed from office.

  7. I’m not worried about this one. They are going to get a million letters telling them what ignoramouses they are. They are going to let this one get a pass. I just feel it. I will email too.

  8. Give her a damn MEDAL for helping these fur angels. Not punish her. WTF is wrong with those assholes anyway?
Was she suppose to let all them drown .. FUCKING stupid assholes

  9. This is so heartbreaking and wrong on so many levels. Let this woman out and help these animals. Instead of arresting her how about joining her to help these poor animals and people and save more. This is beyond sad.

  10. OMG. This woman should be considered a hero for what she did. She saved a lot of innocent animals from drowning. I cannot believe they want to file charges against her. It was a Dam hurricane with flooding water. She did what she thought was right. They don’t do much to people that abuse animals. This just isn’t right. I hope she gets some legal help if they do decide to file charges. What would have happened if all the volunteers hadnt come to the aid of hurricane victims. Did they need a permit? I’m sending prayers that no charges are filed against her.

  11. I absolutely agree with u. Ive been outraged that so many fur babies got left. This Angel that saved these babies does not need to be punished

  12. You want to charge her for being an responsible adult she went out of her way to save Poor Animals from drowning and now you want to charge her wtf are you serious…Come on..if you want to charge anyone charge the owners for not taking their animals with them. The chicken farm lost over a million chickens to flood waters why aren’t they being charged with animal cruelty, or the pig farm with all the pigs in the water shown on facebook in the North Carolina flood waters. She did the right thing She had a bigger heart than most people that just walked by and left them. She deserves a Reward from the State not a Jail Sentence!

  13. This is pathetic! Are they going to fine her since they didn’t get the funds from her registering a shelter kennel. I am disgusted that this woman went out of her way to help these animals that could not help themselves, and now she faces this! Our system is totally messed upl
