In a disturbing video, a woman was caught on camera appearing to be placing a plastic bag over her pet greyhound’s head. Authorities wanted to question the woman and instituted a search at Balgowlah in the northern part of Sydney.

According to the Daily Mail, the woman may have been trying to suffocate her dog, and the RSPCA is urgently seeking anyone who knows the woman and the dog to contact the organization’s hotline. The incident occurred on Monday at Perrone Avenue in Clontarf at about 7:30 p.m. The woman has been described as being of medium build, dressed in pink shorts and sneakers and having shoulder length dark hair. In the video, the greyhound could be seen struggling to get free of the woman as she struggles to put the plastic bag over its head.

When the RSPCA NSW’s Facebook page initially posted the video, some readers thought the dog may have had something in his mouth, and the woman was trying to remove it. That idea, was stated to be inaccurate however, since greyhounds are required to be muzzled when out in public.

In an update on Tuesday morning, the woman has been reportedly identified. The organization posted the following statement and has asked the community to be patient, civil and act accordingly with the laws of the state:

“RSPCA NSW strongly condemns the use of violence, threats, foul language and other menacing activities. Not only do these violate our community standards but they are criminal offences and you may be prosecuted.

While we appreciate people coming forward with information for this investigation, a person of interest is innocent until proven guilty and threats to their safety will not be tolerated.

This person of interest has been identified and while investigations continue, we have chosen to de-identify them and remove our original post for their own safety.

We are all here for the good of animals and the promotion of animal welfare, so let’s not lose our humanity in the meantime.”

Anyone with additional information is asked to call 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 3589)
