With a little help from my friends: Starved dog Champ walks outdoors

In Laurens, South Carolina a starved and abused 16-month-old Mastiff named Champ continues to make the news across the country and beyond. His recovery defies all odds, and his Tuesday morning’s progress report and accompanying video posted by  Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is no different. It was less than a week ago, Champ was barely alive; little more than skin over a skeleton.  It was less than a week ago he was lying out in the dirt starving, near death and crawling with maggots.

And now Champ is up (with assistance) as physical therapy becomes part of his daily routine. His muscles are badly atrophied; no one knew how long he was unable to walk. He is now up and walking, gaining weight and getting stronger each day. The medical staff states his red blood cells are starting to regenerate, and his blood values are holding steady. It is hoped he will no longer need any blood transfusions.

“We are over the moon with his progress and recovery to date,” Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stated just moments before she posted the following video. “For the first time in a VERY long time, CHAMP is feeling what it’s like to be loved & cared for.”

Need a little more of Champ’s recovery? The following photo melted hearts as his ability to forget the horrors he endured from the hands of selfish humans and show his love and forgiveness.

Elizabeth James, the woman accused of starving Champ, has been issued a citation and arrested for animal cruelty. She is currently out on $15,000 bond.

    • l agree so much, poor souls these animals suffer. l wish the same could be done to her. l know it’s bad to want that for any human being. l hope she will suffer down the road with some matter!

  1. Rescue Dogs Rock, thank u so much for helping this pup! He already looks an seems 2 feel better! And 2 this woman who did this, may she rest in jail! This was nothing but pure evil!

  2. What I fear is that the vets will pump him full of vaccines. That is probably a given, but I hope they’ll at least wait until he is completely healthy, so he has a chance to try to throw off the poisons. And if they’re going to neuter him, wait on that, too.
My dog was vaccinated AND neutered at the pound while still in an emaciated and immunocompromised state. First, he developed papillomas. Then, after those subsided, he grew small skin tumors, which were diagnosed as dermal hemangiosarcoma.
In the past, veterinary publications instructed students not to vaccinate an infirm animal, but that seems to have gone out the window, in today’s increasingly pharma-corrupted world.

    • Please, everyone needs to trust that Rescue Dogs Rock and their Veterinarians are doing the absolute best for Champ.

    • You really think that this is the platform for your diatribe about vaccines? This poor animal was less than a day away from dying quite painfully from starvation. Vaccines are the least of his worries. How about wishing this sweet dog a full recovery? You can then preach about vaccines for him later. Better yet, find another place to be inappropriate and post there. This is about him, not you!

      • I didn’t post this information for me. I posted for all the animals who are being harmed in the process of people thinking they are helping them. Your reply is confirmation that some people just want to stay on the surface, and not really think, or learn anything.

      • Chris, don’t worry about what she posts about, just worry about your mean self-righteousness. It is common practice to shoot dogs full of vaccines no matter what condition they’re in because it’s thought to be a shot full of health, life giving, etc. When even in vaccine inserts they say ill or infirm dogs should not get the shots (if only they were fully honest and went way further with that). So it is indeed a real problem and people need to be made aware of it. I’m sure Sue is all about the dog Champ and all animals and not about herself except that she is the one stating it.

    • With many of the vaccines they give live strain of the very condition you are trying to prevent so, yes, your immune system should not be compromised before administering them. Many veterinarian’s don’t give heart worm preventatives to animals because you are actually giving them live heart worm strain. Some vaccines are necessary but you should always be aware of what is given to your pet because it could be more harmful than helpful.

  3. When I first saw the photo, I assumed the poor dog was dead, and could not bring myself to access the entry andread the story. Bless this dear doggie, I hope that he soon is well and fully recovered and wrapped in the loving arms of a good, caring decent family, Bless Him!

  4. Champ is a hero! Thanks to Rescue Dogs Rock for helping champ. This women who let him starve is pure evil I hope they took her others dogs away!

  5. Bless his ❤️Heart… I don’t understand how she or ANY human could punish and Torture a Innocent animal. Her judgment day will come…

  6. Champ is a champ. I hope the news gets better and better. No looking back, only forward. Show that bitch boob you are stronger than her and her fate for the abuse she willfully chose to inflict.

  7. When found guilty the monster who did this should have to pay every penny this baby’s bill is. And make her get rid of the dogs she loves and NEVER be able to own any animal again. I’m sure some of us would take one of her dogs. I would.

  8. Champ is a fighter and will pull through, unfortunately a lot of others don’t make it. She, the Devil in disguise, needs to be severely punished. Animal abuse can not be tolerated anymore. This Country needs to make it a felony with prison time for any abuse to a harmless creature. This POS deliberately starved Champ, I can’t imagine what he was going through, I know how hunger feels and it’s not good. Poor Champ couldn’t get away, but now he has a great life awaiting him and it will be fantastic with lots of food, water and treats…Way to go Champ, you made it!!!

  9. What Sue is saying is absolutely true, and in the dog’s best interest, not her own. An emaciated human whose in recovery, but whose resistance has obviously been seriously challenged, should not be given vaccines, & the same goes for animals. Any good Dr. or Veterinarian knows this. Sue has obviously had a bad experience with that being done to her dog, and she has a very IMPORTANT valid point.! Perhaps instead of looking for the worst in what people do & say, find the best.
