Shelter speaks out after blind, senior dog found wandering

What happened to a recently adopted blind dog? According to NBC 12 News, shortly after the 12-year-old Dachshund was adopted to a new home, he was found wandering alone on a road over 100 miles away. The dog, named OJ, sparked a great deal of attention after he and his canine guide, Blue Dozer, were posted on the Richmond Animal Care and Control Facebook page.

The animal shelter explained that the bonded pair of dogs were surrendered when their owner lost their home – the social media post garnered a huge number of views and shares and in short order, news came that a new home for the pair had been found.

What happened next is unclear. A good Samaritan found the blind dog (OJ) wandering alone on a road far from his new home earlier this week. On Tuesday, the senior dog was taken to Shenandoah Valley Animal Services and a scan of his microchip led staff to Richmond Animal Care and Control, and the dog’s new owner. When the adopter was contacted, she said that the dog had been with a friend…no further details about the wandering dog have been provided (or the status of OJ’s friend, Blue Dozer).

When and if more information about this strange situation is released, this article will be updated.

  1. This makes me cry!!!! What happened??? My heart is broke thinking they have a new life and now ????? What is going on ????

  2. OMG – did they dump the blind pup? Where is the other pup, Blue Dozer? Is he ok ~ fearing something bad, like dog fighting!! I think the shelter should get BOTH back and rehome!! Hoping they will BOTH be safe!

  3. This shelter needs to contact the police for I fear the new owners may have put the blind dog,OJ.in the car, drove 50 to 100 miles from their home, and dumped OJ on the road. I doubt this little blind dog walked along the road for 100 miles and not get hit or noticed by anyone. As for Blue Dozer, the shelter must find out where this dog is and get him back too. I pray he was not “adopted” again only to be used for dog fighting.

Please keep us up to date on both of these dogs. Why are people so heartless and cruel. The new owners story is fishy and doesn’t make sense. The fact they can’t tell you where Blue Dozer is, makes me very suspicious and police should be contacted before it is too late.

  4. WTH?? No , something is not right here. Who are these new adopters? 100 miles away, this little dachshund was found, he’s a senior and blind to boot?? Where is Dozer?
I was so happy to hear when these 2 bonded pups found a home together and now, I’m extremely concerned. I would feel a hole lot better if both dogs came back to the shelter and started over again. Please keep us updated and please, please investigate thoroughly!

  5. Get the police to find out exactly what happened and demand immediate return of both dogs to the shelter or immediate arrest of everyone involved!

  6. The shelters need to get a court order to get Dozer returned and reunite him with OJ. I fear for both dogs safety. I’ll take them both!
They will never be separated in my care thats for sure

  7. MAKE THIS ADOPTER EXPLAIN!!!! Why in the hell were they adopted if they weren’t really needed, unless is was for something horrible???

  8. This is what happens when shelters do NOT do background checks on adopters!!! Would you give a child to a complete stranger? Cats and Dogs face the SAME DANGERS so why give an animals to a complete stranger with NO BACKGROUND CHECK!?

  9. Something is VERY suspicious here – there is something very wrong – I suspect OJ was dumped by this owner and Dozier is in serious trouble – for a blind dog to be found 100 miles away from home makes no sense – both dogs need to be taken away from this person – they are either neglectful or abusive and the dogs are not safe – PLEASE get both OJ and Dozier away from this person – her story is beyond suspicious – it is a lie. Both dogs deserve much better – and shelters need to be more stringent on who they adopt animals out to.

  10. Looks like the friend wasn’t watching the pup and guide!! When you have a four legged baby outside the eras should be secured do it cannot wonder off! The article didn’t say where Dozer was? Yes if love to hear an update the sooner the better!!
