In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a video has gone viral showing a rude mother verbally abusing a group of service dog owners. The video was posted on Wednesday morning by handler Megan Stoff:

ML Leigh
Had this crazy experience yesterday at the mall where some lady asked if she could pet the dogs. People ask us all the time so I just said, “no.” All the dogs are working so it’s my go to answer. And they walked away. No big deal right? This lady went out of her way to come back with her child and yell at us for saying “no” and for not saying, “nO iM sOrRy ThEy’Re TrAiNiNg.” And we should “have a sign or something.” You mean the 20 patches on my dog that say don’t pet?  Entitlement these days is real. They even got mall security because we said they couldn’t pet the working dogs.  Security said that the lady was crying  So much harassment for just saying no. This video is public and is shareable. There was no common sense here.”
The video shows the woman arguing with Megan as well as with the owner of the company. Literally there were four signs telling people not to pet a service dog when they are training or working. When the woman realizes she has been filmed, she shot back stating she was going to call her lawyer. Megan reminded the woman it “is illegal to harass service dogs.”
When the video was posted to Reddit, the comments came flooding in with one poster suggesting the rude woman be named “Service Dog Sally.” She became the butt of hundreds of unkind comments. One person asked her a relevant question?
“How does anyone convince themselves they’re right in these stupid situations? How can your head by so far up your own a**, you convince yourself you are entitled to pet any dog you want regardless of what the owner says?”
To this writer’s knowledge, the woman has not replied.

  1. It is common knowledge you do not bother a service dog, their not there for people to pet, they are the working to help their owner. This woman made an ass out of herself big time.oh and yes lets put big signs around the necks that says no you can’t pet me stupid. My dog is not a service dog and i don’t let just anyone walk up to him.you never know what reaction my dog will have with strangers.

  2. I don’t have a service dog and if someone asked to pet my dog, I would probably say no because I don’t know how my dog will react. Where does this woman get off thinking she has the right pet any dog she pleases? I wonder how she would feel if someone wanted to “pet” her child! What is society coming to, that you have to be harassed because you don’t let someone do as they please? “Service Dog Sally” needs a reality check and a good old fashioned kick in the ass!

  3. What was she expecting security to do about it? Tell someone “Hey you have to let this insane woman maul your service animal?”

  4. As someone who loves dogs, I like to pet them, too, although I ask first, because there are a few dogs who might not like it.

HOWEVER, let’s get to the core of this, which is animals being “trained” to do things for people. It might seem harmless enough on the surface, but here is a synopsis of MY experience as an activist:

Before I worked at a police department, I thought K9 units were great. Then I thought it might be only my own department that was brutalizing the dogs. I found out, to my dismay, that the brutalization is standard. Did you know that police K9’s are routinely hanged to unconsciousness? But that’s not all. When I was doing my research, I came across a testimonial from a blind woman who was very distressed about the cruel mistreatment of her guide dog, by “trainers” at the guide dog “training” center. And I discovered yet more….

Although I knew that our lead K9 “trainer”(at the PD where I worked) also “trained” (and hanged) search and rescue dogs, I was still saying to myself, “THIS has to be an anomaly. Not THAT many people can be abusive and keep it a secret.” But when I left the police department and worked at a hotel, wouldn’t you know it, search and rescue teams with dogs were coming from all over the country for events (three times during the years that I worked there) and I was at first struck by the fact that NONE of these people acknowledged their dogs’ presence except to give orders. There were no kind words, there was no petting. It was, again, like the dogs were pieces of equipment. They were kept in crates when they were not being taken out to be trained, or to do their business. Very unlike how it is presented to us via the media.

But what blew me off the cliff was when a group of about 15 of these handlers were sitting around in the lobby late one night, talking. One of them was regaling the others with the exploits of one of their peers, who conducted an experiment with his dog – beating the dog only when he wore a blue shirt. (I know that dogs are alleged to be color blind, or limited in color perception, but I’m just reporting what I heard). The end of this story was that the dog attacked and bit one of the supervisors, who happened to be wearing a blue shirt. There was hearty laughter all around the group.

An investigation should be made into the abuse of guide dogs. I recently sat next to a guide dog during a concert. The poor dog whimpered pitifully throughout. The owner made no effort to pat him or console him. Recently, a TV program showed trainers putting a miniature harness, with handle, on a tiny Labrador Retriever.

  6. What a stupid bitch. I’m going to be mean here and say she proved her stupidity and her rudeness but what she did was make me question why anyone would sleep with her and have a child with her,!? I feel bad for any child that comes in contact with that kid of hers because she’s raising that kid with some really warped values — that you’re entitled to do anything you want just because you want to.

    • Wow, I am always shocked by the mob mentality, even though I’m seeing it a lot lately. What a pile-on.

I didn’t find the woman who wanted to pet the dog to be nearly as obnoxious as the “trainers,” but maybe that could be partly because I know what the “trainers” are really doing to the dogs in the process of transforming them into canine automatons, who are having their basic social instincts shut down so they can serve their “purpose.”

In the process of domestication, we have injured the canine species in many ways: breeding, resulting in physical and mental afflictions, overpopulation, impound facilities and mass executions, and so much more.

And then, instead of asking how we can ‘give back,’ and atone for these assaults, we continue thinking up new ways to exploit and use them and, in the process, severely stifle their natural behaviors. And that’s without even knowing what goes on behind the scenes, which is even much worse.

And then the dog “trainer” posts her ‘viral video’ to show how great she is, and that the woman who wants to (God forbid!) be friendly with the dog (who obviously wanted to be petted. Did anyone notice the dog was trying to get to the “bad” woman?) is the one who is out of line.

Sad how some people can tell us what is right or wrong, and so many others will agree, without thinking.

    • The worst of all, Mark, is (aside from the fact that dog “trainers” are typically bullies, and narcissistic (I worked beside them for 18 years), but that when one of these “trainers” was rude to the mother, and she reacted to the curt behavior, the “trainer” then releases a video of the encounter, instructing viewers how they should feel about it – they buy into it right away, and virtually all of them become bullies, too, calling names and acting oh so superior. It’s nauseating.

  7. Watched the video on facebook. That “service dog trainer” needs a lesson in humility, a big knock-down off her “boss lady” pedestal; wow, what a piece of work. Naturally her facebook fans are all giddy with hate and self-congratulatory for being on “the right/winning side”…all that usual nauseating garbage put out by people. Such as the PRR regulars here jumping on the “hate the dog-petting lady” bandwagon with self-righteous zeal. The lady with the toddler probably felt sorry for the dogs and simply ASKED if she could pet them; she got a rude NO! shouted at her and she fought back at that rudeness. I’m on her side, as I’ve seen what dog trainers can be like behind the scenes; power obsessed, with massive egos. Authoritarians with no basis in such authority, as the proper basis would mean being truly compassionate at their core. No one with a core of compassion bellows NO! at a stranger who asks permission to do something innocuous.
