According to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, just when you think you have seen it all, along comes another tragic case of animal cruelty worse than the time before, and again our hearts break and tears flow. On Thursday, Lucas came into the Georgia animal shelter; filthy, injured with extensive cuts and even more worrisome – the dog was unable to open her mouth and reportedly has not eaten in two weeks.

As the dog was gently coaxed out of the truck, Lucas could be seen shaking, twitching and drooling. Who could even imagine her suffering; she couldn’t drink, eat or even stick out her tongue. Rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital last night, floods of messages poured in and asked what could have happened to Lucas.

On Friday morning, Lucas was determined to be a female by veterinarians; she is now headed to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (UGA). Last night, she was able to eat some soft food mixed with water. Please note there has been no diagnosis, however the following information was shared on the Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s Facebook page for reference purposes only:

“There are many things that could be going on here including: distemper, tetanus, rabies, trauma & masticatory muscle myositis, which is currently believed most likely:

Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is an immune system disorder in which the dog’s immune system identifies the dog’s own muscle tissue as foreign and attacks it. The masticatory muscles are the muscles involved with chewing. MMM causes these muscles to become swollen and painful. Dogs with MMM cannot open their mouths without excruciating pain. They cannot eat, chew, or pick up their toys.
Some dogs may be predisposed genetically to immune-mediated diseases, including MMM. Suspected triggers of MMM include bacterial and/or viral infection, vaccinations, stress, exposure to allergens, reactions to medication, and exposure to environmental toxins. Unfortunately, most of the time, the actual trigger of MMM will never be known.

Treatment is steroids & outcome depends on how advanced. At this time it’s only a best guess, but we are up against the clock here.”

Please donate to help save this dog’s life. Her veterinary care and treatment will be very expensive.

  2. To be honest, I’m doubting it’s Masticatory muscle myositis, which is what we thought my Kyoko might have had (tests for it came back negative and she only had the sinking in of the head just behind the eyes – not the locked jaw that can come with it). I read alot about it and spoke with my vet, too. It’s not very common, and I realize that not all dogs will show all the symptoms, but my experiences with autoimmune in dogs has not been good. It’s mostly a gut feeling, but I’m worried about this girl. Praying they can find what’s wrong and it can be treated. If not, at least we know she will be cared for and experience love – possibly for the first time in her life.

  3. Praying they are able to help this precious girl. Thank you Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for again taking on the cases that would otherwise have no chance at all. I know you will do what is best for her.

  4. Please help Lucas to the maximum extent – nothing was said about how she was found but whoever had her obviously severely neglected her – And as usual, if not for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC I am sure this ‘shelter’ in Georgia would have just killed her. I hope she can successfully recover from whatever is wrong and get a safe loving home – Lucas deserves it.

  5. Vaccines can do that. Vaccines have so many ugly poisons and metals. Mercury in vaccines does grievous damage to the brain. Keep us posted.
