When an emergency plea went out in Houston earlier in this week after an animal advocate spotted a dog in  dire need of help advocates rushed to help; the stray dog’s head had swollen to at least twice its normal size and he wandered through the neighborhood scavenging for food and relief from his pain.

On her social media page, Laura Jean cried out for help:

“SOS!!! Dead dog walking he wouldn’t come to me and I was only pushing him into traffic. Thanks to all the cars who didn’t stop who could’ve helped me get him to safety. He was last seen going into an apartment complex and I gave my info to some residents. One said he is usually around but in the back. I was unable to find him. If anyone can dedicate some time to look for him, please let me know

This dog will need foster, rescue and lots of pledges if he is found again. Southeast Houston – 77048.”

Less than a day later Gus was caught and Houston K-911 Rescue rushed the dog to the Vergi 24/7 Veterinary Hospital where staff stated it was one of the worst cases of neglect and cruelty they have ever seen. His condition was critical, but he was stabilized and placed on intravenous for hydration with heavy pain medications and a rigorous course of antibiotics.

By Thursday afternoon, veterinarians began to fill in the details of the desperate plight concerning Gus’ past. Not only had a shoestring been tied around his neck which cut into his flesh and delicate neck tissue, the dog had been repeatedly shot with a pellet gun – his body just riddled with bullets. After surgeons sedated him and began to debride the rotting tissue around his neck, they had to stop because the scar tissue was dangerously close to his jugular vein and carotid artery. Gus would need a specialist.

Last night, Gus was transferred to the Texas A&M Small Animal Clinic to consult with a soft tissue specialist.

“To see his head in person fills you with a sense of horror and deep sadness. How in the world is this dog still alive?,” the rescue group posted on their Facebook page.

Gus seems to have an amazing will to live. To help:

  1. Hope they find the scum who did this and do the same to them and never remove the string. Whatever is done to an animal must be done to the evil monster who harmed the dog. Same treatment to owner that they gave their dog.I know that won’t happen with our legal system, but it should.

  2. Seeing poor Gus just makes me despise the human race even more! If these evil bastards are caught they deserve the exact same treatment. Tons of prayers Gus. You are loved more than you could ever know!!

  3. Southeast Houston attention please. Someone out there knows who owned, who mistreated , who shot, who tortured this amazing innocent baby. Turn them in! to everyone. Not just the police because Houston is not known for responding or even caring about animal suffering. You can be a hero for standing up for Gus or you can do this anonymously. Pull together here. Whomever did this to Gus is a danger to other animals and the public as well. This scum that tortured Gus needs prison where he/she can get a taste of horror. We need to watch the judge and all involved when prosecution commences. Gus, You hang in there, baby. Tears are flowing. That comes from love. Those that can help with a few bucks here and there please help with the costs of repair and care of this precious being.

  4. This abuse was evil personified! Anyone who could do this to a helpless animal, is a criminal in the making. They start on helpless animals & later move on to children, women, or the elderly. We must continue to fight for stricter laws & punishment.
Gus, I hope you will learn that not all humans are barbaric. You deserve safety, health & love!
