During the night, the outcome that everyone was waiting for happened in Huntsville, Alabama. The deaf Australian shepherd puppy who fell down a 50 foot hole was finally rescued!

The rescue effort

Seven-week-old Toffee was trapped in the deep, narrow hole since late Thursday afternoon. Rescuers struggled to secure her and had reached out to the public for ideas. Finally, with the help of a net and some tantalizing sardines, little Toffee was removed from the earth.

What happened to Toffee?

Toffee was out playing in her foster family’s yard early Thursday evening when she plunged into the narrow hole. According to WAFF News, the family was unaware that the hole existed and watched in horror as she disappeared into the ground. Despite the 31-hour ordeal, Toffee is unharmed – much to the relief of everyone working to save her.

Early Saturday morning, A New Leash on Life, the rescue agency responsible for Toffee, alerted Facebook followers that the deaf puppy is finally safe:

TOFFEE IS SAFE!!! Our community came together the past few days in a beautiful way, and we are beyond grateful. Shout out to WAFF, WHNT, WAAY, Paint Rock Fire Department, Roto-Rooter HuntsvilleAL, Land Trust, Cave and Wildlife specialists, USDA, volunteer spelunkers, Hope For Paws, EVERYONE around the country who cared, and prayed and provided supplies and support for the rescue of this very fortunate puppy.

  1. They gave her the stinkiest food and it worked-sardines and used a snare. So happy, as we all are about the outcome of this. The way this community came together and pooled all their resources together, helped get this pup out. They had it on live stream yesterday, and you could see all the people trying to figure out the best solution for this little girl and it finally came together and worked. All the professional groups, as well as people from the community all pitched together to make this happen. What a nice way to start the weekend.

  2. Wow! Toffee had many many Great Samaritans! Proof how great things can be accomplished when people work together! Thank you, again, rescuers!

Also, I know the owners will search their yard literally “inch by inch” to insure that nothing like this ever happens again.

  3. Saw this on the news – so glad Toffee was rescued – and kudos to all who never gave up – Thank you all for saving this little one – you are all Heroes!!
