In Southwest Miami-Dade, Florida  an injured white husky, unable to walk, was found last week in a very small cage made of chicken wire. No one was sure how long the dog had been abandoned on the side of a dirt road, but her rescuers said the dog was extremely thin, thirsty and very sweet.

Georgina Milhet, along with her nephews, who had been on a horseback ride in the Redlands found the husky in the cage. As she opened the cage, the dog crawled out and was unable to walk – her legs appeared to have been broken at one time and allowed to heal on their own. Her elbows were full of lacerations where she used them to help her crawl, and her nails had grown into the pads of her feet.

According to Cbs12News, Kaylin Ricciardi, a volunteer with GTS Husky Rescue, where the dog now named Lucky is being cared for and treated is estimated to be between two-and-a-half to three years of age.

In a response from the Miami-Dade Animal Services Humane Animal Response Team (HART), their investigation has determined the dog had not been confined to a cage as initially reported, and the door of the cage had been opened leading the finder to speculate the dog may have entered the cage to find food, water or refuge. In addition, the speculation the dog had been confined to a cage which resulted in her stunted growth and limb deformity may not have been accurate.

Miami-Dade Services (ASD) wrote the following report:

“The facts involving this dog are that she appeared in the area in which she was found by the Good Samaritan approximately 2 1/2 years ago. At that time she already had deformed forelegs, which are not the result of being confined to a cage as speculated. Well-meaning individuals on non-residential farmland took pity on her and allowed her to take refuge on the property. A Pastor living on a nearby property was interviewed on June 5th, 2018, he stated that the injustice involving the information being spread about the dog was hurtful and must stop. The witness advised the dog roamed freely and had never been confined to a cage as long as he had known her. She spent her days on the farm and surrounding areas up until a fire destroyed the property approximately one month ago. ASD performed a walkthrough of the abandoned farmland which did in fact bear evidence of a fire having taken place. The timeline provided by the neighbor coincides with a report received by Animal Services involving a small, white, foxlike dog with deformed forelegs roaming in the Redlands. The property on which she sought refuge over the last 2 1/2 years is in close proximity to the location the Good Samaritan reported to have found her which, is expected given her limited mobility.”

According to the investigation, the property was not securely fenced and the dog roamed the Redlands area using the feeding stations put out by rescues and Good Samaritans as her only source of food.

Now that Lucky is with GTS Husky Rescue, the goal is to get her healthy again and help her gain more mobility. At this time, they are researching the proper prosthetics for her. GTS Husky Rescue is collecting donations to help pay for Lucky’s prosthetics.

  1. They let her roam for 2-1/2 YEARS without doing anything to help her besides giving her food???????????? How can these people live with themselves to see a dog in this condition and not rescue her? It figures that it’s Florida, right behind Texas in intelligence!

  2. Why didn’t these “well meaning” individuals that allowed her to live on their property call someone to come rescue her? Merely allowing her to “exist” doesn’t show much compassion (that goes for that pastor too). A dog with her physical disabilities was certainly at risk for 2 1/2 years. Someone should have helped her long before now.

  3. If her nails had grown into the pads of her feet…that is NOT helping a sweet dog. And the pastor standing up for those people? That right, God made animals for our entertainment so we are better than any animal and we don’t have to be responsible. What was a stupid cage doing around there anyway? Clean up and stop being slobs. A big thank you to the wonderful lady who saved the sweet dog.

  4. Thanks Marianne! You said it do eloquently!!! I pray the pup Lucky will get the ptoprrnorosthetics and find anyone worthy Of Her! A pox on the people who owned her formerly and didn’t seek help for her front legs! I’d like to break theirs fir their punishment and not have fix it for a year then they can go thru the pain she will to get them fixed!!! Lucky, you get well completely Ok???!!!

  5. Animal abuse is closely linked to crime every time. Cheap sadistic and fools talk about “getting off the grid” is so fashionable lately. Animal abuse is involved in this. Cock fighting must be outlawed and more funding for police to do more. On facebook who is paying itself off of advertisements –who advertises animal abuse filmed around the Dog Meat Trade and invites people who involve themselves in harming animals to enjoy watching–Facebook makes money off of animal abuse and specifically the dog meat trade!!! This needs to be stopped and protested and petitioned about to end it on facebook. Facebook is actually promoting the animal cruelty!!

  6. I personally saw this dog right after she was found and watched her “walk”. It was one of the most heartbreaking things I have seen. She would crawl-walk for a few feet, and then sit up on her deformed hind legs, in appearance to take the pressure off of the front legs. While there were some sores on her legs, there weren’t any that would have indicated extended (as in years) from continued exposure to rubbing on the ground. In addition, there was no way she could have roamed freely and still been alive, and she damn sure couldn’t have made it to the feeding stations that Redland Rockpit Abandoned Dog Project puts out to keep abandoned dogs from starving to death. Too, if this was truly the case, she would have been seen long before she was and they would have picked her up considering her poor condition and knowing she didn’t stand a chance out there. (There are dog fighters that actively seek dogs to use for bait — she would have been an easy target, not to mention an easy attack for all the other abandoned dogs in the area.) This is just another classic case of Miami-Dade Animal Services / Kathy Labrada trying to cover up for the cruelty in the county that they refuse to do anything about. Labrada / MDAS never saw the dog, so how could they make any true comments / conclusions on her condition? This is so typical of MDAS. All they ever do is make excuses and blame-shift and smoke screen instead of helping the animals they are highly paid to protect. Thankfully because of Gina and her nephew who found and got Lucky to safety, Redland Rockpit Abandoned Dog Project who picked her up and GTS Husky Rescue who took her, “Lucky” finally will know what it means to be loved, out of pain and have a good life.
