A dog owner from Staten Island who left his two dogs in a hot car for over an hour is alleged to have told police he was drunk and forgot about the dogs on Saturday afternoon. The small dog, a 12-year-old Yorkshire terrier who had been listed in critical condition, didn’t make it and died.

Kenneth Schnabel, 54, the owner of the dogs, had been drinking in the morning and left the pooches locked inside of his vehicle in Bensonhurst. The outside temperature registered at 89 degrees.  Good Samaritans spotted the dogs clawing and barking at the window of the vehicle and called 911.

According to the New York Daily News, Schnabel accepted full responsibility.

“Those are my dogs. I f***ed up. I was drunk. I left my car like that,” Schnabel told the police.

NYPD Emergency Service Unit officers tried to save the dogs by cooling them down with water and giving them oxygen. The police then rushed the dogs to the veterinary hospital. The seven-year-old Springer spaniel survived and is expected to recover; not so for the tiny Yorkie.

At Schnabel’s arraignment, he was very upset when told one of his dog’s had died. Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Deanna Himelson told the court the defendant parked his car in front of a fire hydrant and left the doors and windows tightly closed. It is estimated the dogs suffered in the car for 90 minutes before someone called 911.

Schnabel has been battling cancer of the mouth stated his lawyer. His previous records indicate prior arrests for drug possession, robbery and burglary. His bail was set at $10,000.

  1. I bet his is upset, that’s what he gets for being “drunk” and taking his dogs with him and leaving them in a hot car! I suppose we should be sympathetic he is supposed to be “battling mouth cancer” (I suppose that is his reason to get drunk? Well sorry, my sympathies lie with the innocent dogs and the one who lost it’s life because of his irresponsibility!

  2. Whether he has cancer of the mouth or not, that is no excuse or reason for leaving those dogs, who trusted you to survive, in that hot car for over and hour. He should blame himself and with his prior drug possession and burglary, doesn’t make him and upright citizen and to boot, he is probably an alcoholic. If he loved his dog, he should do something in memory of the little Senior Yorkie and turn his life around, maybe volunteer in his local shelter. He probably won’t get the Springer spaniel back and he shouldn’t since it was just luck and God’s will that that dog didn’t die. I hope he thinks how both dogs felt and go to AA and anywhere else he can get help.

  3. what does having cancer have to do with getting drunk and what does it have to do with parking your car, and leaving your dogs to die in a hot car?

  4. OMG the poor little senor died because of a worthless drunk!!!! he shut all the windows and these poor dogs were left In an oven!!!!! that poor angel died a horrible horrible painful death and this POS needs to be charged with murder!!!!! he cannot get away with this BARBARIC CRUELTY….NY better step up and make this creep pay!!!!!! the other poor pup better not be returned to this loser!!!!! R.I.P angel……this creep better know HELLS WAITING

  5. I HOPE the INMATES take care of this PUKK !!!! He needs to Suffer as both dogs did!!! ALSO NEEDS to MEET the same FATE as that POOR little YORKIE DID while SUFFERING a HORRIFIC death while HIS so-called “MASTER” sat in an air-conditioned BAR WETTING his Whistle with the ICE COLD BREW!!!!

  6. Being drunk is no excuse for what this scumbag did to his 2 dogs. It makes his actions more egrigeous. Throw the book at him; lock him in a cell with tin panels and leave him for about a week with no food or water. That would be justice.

  7. Being drunk is no excuse for what this scumbag did to his two dogs. It makes his actions even more egregious. Lock him up in a metal cell out in the sun; leave him for about a week with no food or water. THAT would be justice.

  8. Lock this POS up in a sealed, hot car with no water or food for 13 hours (1 hour for each of the 12 year old yorkie’s years plus 1 extra hour for “punishment”) & let’s see how he does…….

If nothing else, this POS will receive a “preview” of Hell (where he has a reserved spot to burn forever for his cruelty)……

Precious little treasure, RIP and look for MacKitty in Heaven….. you will be welcome to join his group of snuggle buddies…….. so sorry that you were failed so horribly by humans……..

  9. Rip little one, prayers the other dog makes it. Lock him in a hot car and show him how those poor dogs felt. I hope he is never allowed to have another pet again

  10. Excuses, excuses, excuses – poor me, I killed my dog, I was drunk and left them in a hot car to die, I have cancer of the mouth – Guess what – I don’t care one damn bit about you – you are a damn alkie who was only concerned about your next drink – cry all you want, you killed your 12 year old dog and now you are sorry. Tell it to someone who cares – these dogs depended on you for their safety and all you cared about was a drink – you let them down -live with it. All your fault.

  11. It seems like every late spring it is discussed at great length and with a tremendous amount of reputation the dangers of leaving dogs and other pets inside a hot car. One would think basic common sense would not make this a needed topic to discuss seeing as it should be very obvious to people even drunk people that leaving an animal in a hot car is a terrible idea. However it is tragically very clear that people are just plain stupid as this story points out and thus we must continue to go through this year after year. I do not know what it is going to take for people to finally grasp this very simple and basic concept, but whatever it will take needs to be implemented asap because stories like this should not ever happen and this behavior needs to end now.
