It happened in central India, and a witness captured the unbelievable scene on video as a three-year-old leopard struggled to stay afloat in a 20-foot deep well in Dhundi Village located in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the MsmNews video, local villagers and forest rescue services teamed up  after the wild cat was spotted submerged in the well after it fell while searching for food. Lokesh Nirapure, assistant director of forest services in the area directed his staff to collect ropes and build a makeshift ladder.

“As mercury rises, the wild animals stray into human habitats in search of water. The villagers said this leopard had been spotted several times near the water bodies and wells recently. Leopard sightings have become more common in the area as drought pushes the big cats into human habitats in search of food and water,” stated Nirapure.

The mobile phone video shows the men lowering a 20 foot bamboo ladder into the well as the animal continued to stay afloat. And then in an unbelievable feat of intelligence, the cat slowly climbed up the ladder to safety. Once on land, he quickly ran into the forests.

  1. Stay with it – the end is incredible!
SO heartwarming, to see humans working together to SAVE wildlife, rather than destroy it: At the end, the leopard pauses to look over the shoulder, and “thank” rescuers, before scampering off to the safety of nearby woods!

  2. Glad to see that villagers were able to work together to save this beautiful animal. Should be watering areas for wild animals like this so that they don’t go into the villages. Yes, it would cost money, but could save human lives.

  3. Necessity is the mother of invention, this shows just how smart animals are when they have to survive and how the villagers worked together instead of killing it. Bravo!
